NAB Realizes Cloud Value Faster with the Help of AWS Managed Services
Realizing the Value of Cloud Faster
In 2017, National Australia Bank (NAB), Australia’s largest business bank, started to accelerate its cloud journey. Amazon Web Services (AWS) and its AWS Managed Services (AMS) played a role in that journey, helping to jump-start NAB’s digital transformation.
AMS helps organizations reach the value of the cloud faster as they undergo digital transformation. Initially, NAB was still building proficiency within its internal cloud skills. AMS helped close that skill gap and quickly provided an AWS Landing Zone—a secure, production-ready migration environment. “AWS Managed Services helped us create an AWS Landing Zone environment where we could migrate applications at scale. We didn't have to spend months, possibly years, creating that. We could begin migration straightaway,” says Steve Day, executive general manager of infrastructure, cloud, and workplace for NAB.

Making Digital Transformation Progress While Also Building Cloud Skills
For NAB’s initial migration of 30 applications, AMS oversaw all infrastructure operations tasks needed to run AWS at scale, including security, compliance, provisioning, availability, patching, monitoring, alerting, change reporting, incident response, and cost optimization.
During a migration, AMS takes full operational responsibility for AWS environments until an organization’s internal teams are ready to take over. AMS contracts are month-to-month, which allowed NAB to use services for only as long as needed. By implementing best practices to maintain infrastructure, AMS reduced both the operational overhead and risk for NAB. With AMS overseeing infrastructure operations, the bank could direct its time and resources to up-leveling their staff and developing business strategy instead.
Day says, “As we started out and upskilled our workforce, we moved our applications to AWS Managed Services. The team ran those applications for us, which allowed us to migrate at scale from the start, all while freeing us to build up our in-house cloud skills.”
